2013-2014 Girls OVATION AWARD

Tonight, I went to a meeting at dPAL and I was given a trophy that stands for them giving me, our team…..our school…a Standing Ovation of the Year for recognizing what our Girls’ Basketball players have accomplished during our 2013-2014 season on and off the basketball court.  We are the Team/Organization/School Role model and this award embodies this thought.  Everything from GPAs to Community Service to our Progression as Players & Coach.  I am very proud to have received this Award and I want to thank all the players, parents, and supporters for believing in what I do with these players.1796671_10152244140248398_400723384_n

Black History Basketball Tribute

Have you seen the new jerseys for the Junior Varsity Basketball Team?  Each player will represent someone notable in even unrecognized in Black History as it pertains to the game of basketball.

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA**Some players are missing.  Keep reading to know which all were represented.**

This was Coach Champion’s vision to have herself and her 25 players show respect to those who paved the way for them today.  The players were excited to take on this vision.  Their task is to learn about the players they are representing and present them to an audience as well as know who they are showing respect to whenever asked.

Recently these uniforms were revealed to a crowd of people and as the Law Lions JV Team were working hard to bring home a win (and we did :-) I could see people googling on their phones trying to find out more about various tribute players they may not have known about.  Players were approached and shown love for their efforts.  It was an honorable learning experience for everyone.

Congratulations on a job well done Marion Law Lions JV Basketball Team!

MLK Day Trip To The University of Michigan

What better way to celebrate MLK Day then to reward students with the honor of visiting University of Michigan’s 28th Annual MLK Symposium in Ann Arbor on their school day off for this National Holiday. Vice Principal Deangelo Alexander and Athletic Director/Coach Alicia Champion took 16 selected pre-K thru 8th grade students to the university for their Youth Program while also embarking on so much more that AD/Coach Champion placed on the Agenda that was going on throughout the Michigan Campus:

  • MLK Youth Symposium (at the Modern Languages Building)
  • Harry Belafonte Presents HEALING THE DIVIDE; A Memorial Lecture (at the Hill Auditorium)
  • Bullying Discussion and Engagement (at the Modern Languages Building)
  • Harriet Tubman Song & Acting Skit by Christine Dixon (at the Modern Languages Building)
  • The Black History Mobile Museum (at Michigan Union)
  • MLK Day Celebration Presented by the School of Music, Theatre, & Dance (at the Power Center)

The students boarded the party bus provided by Mr. Raphael B. Johnson and the 180 Program. They left Marion Law Academy around 730a and arrived at the University of Michigan at 8:30a where they presumed on the MLK Youth Symposium held at the UofM Modern Languages Building. It focused on black history, racism, and the state of bullying in this generation in which they had a chance to meet Christine Dixon as she portrayed Harriet Tubman through song and an acting skit. During the youth symposium, the Hill Auditorium hosted a 90 minute lecture given by the great Mr. Harry Belafonte delivering the memorial message of HEALING THE DIVIDE where I sat in the dead center of the podium towards the front.  Before we completely left the Youth Symposium, students had a chance to witness the Men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. as they put on a brief step show.

Afterwords, we all ventured to the UofM Power Center for an MLK Day Celebration of the Arts provided by the UofM School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. AD/Coach Champion reserved our attendance and seating through the SMTD Coordinator Evelyn Robinson
and after meeting our students, she was honored by our interest so she gave us 3rd & 4th row seating in the mid-section.  She was so excited to welcome our students back for their 2014 Voices of Black American Musical Theatre in February as they celebrate and examine the black experience through musical theatre as well as the Compagnie Kafig Correria Agwa which is a dance concert by young male dancers from Rio de Janeiro.

Lastly, our students had a chance to witness more about THE PEACEMAKERS by learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Harry Belafonte, and more within Black History as they witnessed The Black History Mobile Museum 101. Khalid El-Hakim founded this museum and preserves varies artifacts of black culture. They saw slave chains, nigger-related articles and products, along with a video clip of history.

The students thanked all who provided these functions for them to adventure in and we headed back to Detroit and Marion Law Academy. For them, this was the longest educational learning day, but it was one with a great impact for mental awakening. Thank

you Mr. Harry Belafonte, the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Alpha Phi Alpha, Mr. Khalid El-Hakim, Ms. Christine Dixon, SMTD, Mr. Raphael B. Johnson, and Mr. Eric (driver) for making this day possible! We appreciate it.

Sidenote : Ms. Ally Ciotti fell ill Sunday and could not make the event and we hope she gets well, soon!
